Most disrespectful experience

I've been travelling for around 3 years now, and out of every place in the world i've been to i have never had such an awful experience and been greeted by a person so disgustingly rude as the owner of this house.

To preface and explain, due to unforeseen family circumstances my mother had to bring my younger brother with us to our one night trip, and has been so preoccupied with personal affairs that she did not ring to clarify this with the owner, which is our mistake and we do (and did) apologise for this. Upon arrival, we offered to pay extra for him as our room was for 2, but this was dismissed and turned down.

Upon entering with my younger brother, the lady who owned the house immediately accused him of not being 13, which he is, and abruptly asked him 'what's your date of birth'. My younger brother replied accurately but was visibly shaken and we were taken aback at the immediate hostility.

She then began to scoff in our face and say we were 'having her on' and 'this is 2026 you can't do this', to which my mother replied and apologised stating that although he was 13 and the lady had said it was previously okay, she had no issue in paying extra for him.

The woman then continued to scoff and said she didn't want our money she just found it ridiculous that we were trying to 'have her on'. At this point my mother was also visibly uncomfortable so i stepped in to try and explain that due to a family illness, we unexpectedly had to bring my younger brother at the last minute, to which she cut me off mid sentence and said 'i don't give a toss' and waved her hand in my face. I was appalled as id just disclosed that we had a serious family matter and i was sorry but it's all we could do, so to be met with this response was utterly shocking. She said 'i have my own personal issues and frankly i don't care about yours and im running a business', to which i replied calmly stating i completely understood that and respect it however i was simply trying to explain why we were in this situation, that was all.

The lady then began to complain that we didn't even have the decency to call over this, and i explained again that we do apologise but with the circumstances and my mother working for the last 8 days, it's all been a little hectic and we'd completely overlooked that option. I again offered to pay for my younger brother to resolve the matter, and she said she didn't want our money and she didn't have to let us in. Continuously i remained calm despite the aggression and said i understood what she was saying and that it was her property. She repeatedly shouted whilst waving her hand in our faces that she could kick us out whenever she wanted to and didn't have to allow us into the house, asking me 'do you understand how a contract works', which is a blatant attempt to belittle me, though a futile attempt as i have actually studied contract and business law.

At this point i was exasperated and felt i was repeating myself but wanted to try and resolve the situation without her being upset and feeling we'd overstepped. I said i understood everything that she was saying, it was only due to our family illness that this- and she cut me off again, stating she 'didn't care at all' whilst scoffing in my face. I was tired of being polite at this point so said outright 'that was rude of you, please don't be rude to me because i haven't been rude to you'.

She then told us to get out, leave the property and find somewhere else to stay. My mum was devastated and asked where we were meant to go on such short notice, and i said we'd driven 3 hours to be here and apologised again for not calling ahead and offered to pay extra.

The lady then turned to my mother and told her she needed to reach me respect. This was absolutely disgusting, as i'd honestly and truly been nothing but respectful especially given the hostility we faced. I'd remained calm, apologised too many times to count and let her cut me off and belittle both myself and my mother, so for her to tell my own mother she needed to teach me respect was disgraceful.

She asked how old i was and i said 22, to which she said it was time i learned respect and how a business works. I told her i'd been completely respectful but i found it quite rude of her to wave her hand in my face and dismiss what i was saying.
The lady then let us come in and said she couldn't be bothered with my 'stories'.
I apologised again as despite the situation and my feelings, i never want to upset people or come across as rude.

She then asked my mother if she knew the door code to get in, to which my mum replied yes and the lady said 'i'm not convinced, show me' and made her put the code in to show her she could do it. This in itself is so extremely belittling and unnecessarily hostile, and absolutely unacceptable customer service particularly for the business owner of a hotel.
After my mother did the lock perfectly, i once again offered to pay for my brother as we were at the reception area, and she said 'no i don't care about your money i wouldn't care if you brought 2 toddlers here, what i don't want is the goff from you'.

The rest of the experience was being shown the room where we changed, grabbed our bags and headed straight back out. Due to this disgusting experience we didn't want to stay the night, and my mother decided to find somewhere else to stay instead. She still paid for the room and didn't request a refund as she is respectful and again didn't want to cause any upset.

To conclude, though i am only young, I am fully aware of how a business runs as a restaurant manager for a massive football stadium and a paralegal for a law firm. And i understand that absolutely no one has to speak to guests/ customers in such an aggressive and unprofessional manner as i was spoken to in order for a business to thrive, particularly in front of a young child. Had we been troublesome guests or i had been rude, i would slightly understand the way i was treated, but we were not and i was in no way rude. The treatment i received was the most disgustingly disrespectful experience I've ever had, and i am shocked by the utter disregard this lady shown. It's extremely clear to me that she thought she could bully and belittle us into tolerating the awful treatment she wanted to give, as the owner of the property.

I cannot un recommend a place more and am still in shock at this experience.

Regina is a 5 star hostess. Incredibly helpful and just an all round amazing lady!! The house is beautiful. Bed was super comfy and the views over the countryside are spectacular. Incredible when you think that it's located only about 15 minutes from the NEC and Birmingham Airport. Big renovations taking place next year so very interested to check in and see how they're going. We stayed here for two nights for a family funeral nearby. The hotel stock in Coventry is generally basic and quite expensive, and the hotel we originally booked had sent us demands for breakage deposits and copies of our ID just beforehand. Their reviews were very variable. From my initial call Regina made us totally welcome, giving us an excellent price for the apartment. We were free to take advantage of the wonderful grounds of this listed building family home, and had a sumptuous bed, plenty of storage space, a large traditional bathroom, and a living room /kitchen with all facilities. Breakfast was available in the spacious dining room. Display fridge full of goodies, every bread product imaginable, Huge choice of quality drinks, cereals, fresh fruits, and special diet items. Eggs, cheeses, cold meats of your choice. We slept very well, and will definitely return, as we have family in Coventry who need a lot of help.

Perfect stay – accessible, peaceful, and full of heartRooms: 5/5 | Service: 5/5 | Location: 5/5Noteworthy detailsAs a wheelchair user, I’m always a bit nervous about accessibility, but those fears were put to rest in seconds. The room we stayed in was a downstairs suite — fully accessible and beautifully spacious. And to top it all off. The room was pink.

Inside the building, every corner was immaculate, smelled amazing, and had such a lovely, homely feel. You could tell care and pride goes into every detail. The bed was so comfy I was out cold within minutes — a rare win for someone like me who normally has a hundred things going on in my brain at night.

This wasn’t just a stay. It felt like a retreat — peaceful, accessible, and full of warmth and charm. If you’re looking for somewhere inclusive, welcoming, and genuinely beautiful inside and out, I can’t recommend Coundon Lodge enough.Hotel highlightsGreat view, Quiet, Great value
